How was it made and why is it so difficult to replicate?
I'm not a programmer, I'm not sure how A-Life works, but I like to think that telling a thing to do something is easy, but writing an algorithm for that thing to be able to decide what is going to do is much harder, and most importantly is how to make sure the A-Life doesn't overwhelm the system resources and make the game run out of memory to store all the data for each individual NPC, without also simply deleting everything.Replicating it isn't about the difficulty. Everything is possible. It's simply a question of whether an upcoming game needs it. There hasn't been any major game recently that was an open world survival game with NPCs playing an important part in the world. So why should they try to mimick A-Life?Alife tries to simulate but more specifically create a life in world so NPCs trying to think individually, every NPC has own motivation for going through zone, seeking artefacts, killing mutants and etc, and when NPC is going in simplified mode it has reduced and simplified rules how every NPC interacts in this mode.On the surface, A-Life is simple: something spawns somewhere, goes to some place, does thing there, moves to other place.

In searching for life in extraterrestrial space, it is essential to act based on an unequivocal definition of life.In the twentieth century, life was defined as cells that self-replicate, metabolize, and are open for mutations, without which genetic information would remain unchangeable, and evolution would be impossible.Current definitions of life derive from statistical mechanics, physics, and chemistry of the twentieth century in which life is considered to function machine like, ignoring a central role of communication. Recent observations show that context-dependent meaningful communication and network formation (and control) are central to all life forms.Evolutionary relevant new nucleotide sequences now appear to have originated from social agents such as viruses, their parasitic relatives, and related RNA networks, not from errors. By applying the known features of natural languages and communication, a new twenty-first century definition of life can be reached in which communicative interactions are central to all processes of life.

Persistent NPCs really made the old games feel alive. For example, maybe a random Loner saved your life from a group of bandits or something. You could give that guy a powerful gun, and you might run into him later, still using the gun you gave him. Or maybe one day you’ll randomly come across his corpse in an anomaly field, with that same gun on it that you gave him.So NPC's have AI, right? A-Life is basically "AI Life." Like you don't necessarily need to interact with the NPC's, they'll go out and about and do routines, explore, etc."The A-Life 2.0 system is responsible for ensuring that the Zone lives its own life regardless of your actions. Artificial life (ALife or A-Life) is a field of study wherein researchers examine systems related to natural life, its processes, and its evolution, through the use of simulations with computer models, robotics, and biochemistry. The discipline was named by Christopher Langton, an American computer scientist, in 1986.In 1987, Langton organized the first conference on the field, in Los Alamos, New Mexico. There are three main kinds of alife, named for their approaches: soft, from software; hard, from hardware; and wet, from biochemistry. Artificial life researchers study traditional biology by trying to recreate aspects of biological phenomena. These topics are broad, but often include evolutionary dynamics, emergent properties of collective systems, biomimicry, as well as related issues about the philosophy of the nature of life and the use of lifelike properties in artistic works.A traditional model of a biological system will focus on capturing its most important parameters. In contrast, an alife modeling approach will generally seek to decipher the most simple and general principles underlying life and implement them in a simulation. The simulation then offers the possibility to analyse new and different lifelike systems. Vladimir Georgievich Red'ko proposed to generalize this distinction to the modeling of any process, leading to the more general distinction of "processes as we know them" and "processes as they could be".

"Life's a Bitch" is a song by American rapper Nas, released by Columbia Records on April 19, 1994 as the third single from his debut studio album, Illmatic (1994). Issued as a 12" single, it features guest vocals from AZ and a cornet performance from Nas' father Olu Dara.
AZ's verse was the first of his to be recorded in his career. "Life's a Bitch" has been sampled in other hip hop songs on several occasions, including the singles "YSIV" by Logic (2018), "Keep It Real" by Miilkbone (1995), and "Carry On" by Statik Selektah featuring Joey Bada$$ (2014).The song's title and concept was later mentioned in Nas' verse on the collaboration track "Affirmative Action" off his 1996 album It Was Written in which Nas raps "Life's a bitch but god-forbid the bitch divorce me".Nas's verse discusses how he is happy to be alive at 20 years old, his rough childhood, consisting of "robbing foreigners" of their green cards, and selling crack. However, the tone of his words suggest that he is reflecting rather than glorifying his deeds, and now has a more positive outlook on life."I asked my dad to play on the end of it — I told him to play whatever comes to mind when he thinks of me as a kid. I think he's really proud to see me coming up and really taking my life serious and doing what I want."
According to the website 80,000 Hours, the typical career is just that: 80,000 hours long. That’s an almost unfathomable amount of time. But life is long too. The typical person is alive for slightly more than 4,000 weeks, and awake and conscious for the equivalent of 3,000 weeks.
Careers are not the mere linear progression of titles ascending toward the “C” acronyms: CMO, CTO, CEO. Better to think of your working life not in one dimension, but in two: the horizontal exploration of ideas, skills, and tasks, and vertical commitments to a single line of work that really fits. And if you don’t enjoy those moments, no sequence of honorifics will dispel your misery. Some people take jobs with long commutes not fully considering what it will do to their health. Or they take jobs that require lots of travel not fully intuiting what it will mean for their family life.Or they’ll take horribly difficult jobs for money they don’t need, or take high-status jobs for a dopamine rush with a half-life of about three days. If you want to be smarter about your beingness in time, either you can read a lot of impenetrable philosophy or you can listen to Jim.Being stuck in the middle is agony: to be ambitious overall but uninterested in going above and beyond at work, or to be unambitious by nature and yet feel pressured to become a full-on workist. People are happiest when their life is aligned with their identity.

The International Society for Artificial Life (ISAL) is seeking proposals to host the Conference on Artificial Life in 2028 and 2029. We will select two teams, one to organize ALIFE 2028 and one for ALIFE 2029. Proposals for both years are being solicited at once to allow maximum flexibility.
The board is responsible for managing the society, facilitating the organization of conferences, interfacing with the Artificial Life journal, advocating artificial life research, and developing and promoting the community as a whole. One of the most beautiful examples of emergence in nature is the graceful but disciplined flocking of birds. A baby rescued from the earthquake’s rubble was named Aya, meaning “a sign of God’s existence.” But what is the life ahead of her?
Not enough water or food or baby formula. No adequate schooling and not enough legal work, especially not for women. One sees the overcrowded photographs of children smiling, flashing a thumbs-up. How to square the images, the proof of life, with the conditions of living?I suspect they looked at the pictures coming out of the hospital, and they saw the same thing that the doctors saw when they declared her birth a miracle. They saw two large, black, piercing eyes that gazed at the camera with absolute acceptance. They saw life wrested from ruins.Merve Emre writes about a photograph of a child, named Aya, who was born during the recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, which have killed thousands of people. It’s a boy, they said, when he first emerged from the rubble. The video of his rescue shows a man in a red-and-white kaffiyeh bounding across the ruined stones with a limp, naked creature pressed to the front of his body. Several seconds later, another man runs after him and flings a green blanket into the air.

So of course, there would be obvious things, you know, a very clear signature of technology or a skeleton or something like that. But we think that a lot of the evidence that we might encounter first will be much more subtle. For example, chemical signs of life that have to be detected above a background of abiotic chemistry. On Mars, for example, the long history of exploration there gives us a lot of context for what we might find. But we’re potentially talking about samples that are billions of years old in those cases, and on Earth, those kinds of samples, the evidence of life is often degraded and difficult to detect. And then for exoplanets, these are planets beyond our own solar system. Really, what we’re looking for there are very large magnitude signs of life that can be detectable through a telescope from many light-years away.So any one of those things, if they rose to the suspicion of being evidence of life, would be really heavily scrutinized in a very sort of specific and custom way to that particular observation. But I think there are also some general principles that we can follow.
